What is Driver CPC?

Driver CPC is a qualification that all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers will need to hold if they want to drive for a living.

Driver CPC applies to drivers of vehicles on roads open to the public and for which a driving licence in any of the following categories is required.

  1. C1, C1+E, C or D+E
  2. D1, D1+E, D or D+E

All drivers of the above categories who are either;

  1. Nations of an EU member state or
  2. Nationals of a non-EU member state but who are employed or used by an organisation based in an EU member state

will have to hold a Driver CPC is they wish to drive professionally.

It is aimed not only at improving the knowledge and skills of PCV and LGV drivers when they start work, but also at ensuring these skills are maintained and developed throughout their working life. If you hold a licence in both categories you only have to obtain one Driver CPC

The deadline for all coach and bus drivers to attain their Driver Qualification Card passed in September 2013, all bus/coach drivers must now have a Driver CPC Qualification Card to continue to drive professionally. For lorry drivers the deadline is September 2014. After September 2014 it is a case of completing another 35 hours periodic training within the 5 year life span of your Driver Qualification Card in order to renew it.
