Our Wood Chipper courses are designed to provide your staff with the correct training and information to ensure that your company meets the legal requirements and will also reduce the risk of accidents when carrying out chipping and mulching operations. Every year a number of people are seriously injured by Wood Chippers and some fatally. This course trains staff to operate wood chippers safely and help avoid accidents.

Who Should Attend

Any person who is responsible for assisting in or operating wood chippers for chipping, mulching and waste disposal purposes. These groups of people can include Horticulturalists, Arborists, Green Keepers, Parkland Staff and Council workers.

Course Objectives

  • To know and understand the roles of a Wood Chipper operator.
  • To identify potential hazardous areas related to the job.
  • To understand the key issues arising from the use of a Wood Chipper.
  • Identify areas of danger in using wood chippers.
  • Safeguarding pedestrians in an area where the Wood Chipper is to be used.
  • Demonstrate competence in the safe use and operation of Wood Chippers.

Course Content

  • Understand the main legal requirements relating to operating a portable wood-chipper with particular reference to the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (NI) 2006 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (NI) 1999.
  • Identify and comply with the relevant manufacturer’s instructions manuals.
  • Identify various hazards associated with the use of wood-chippers including noise, vibration, entanglement, ejection of material being chipped and manual handling.
  • Identify key controls, functions and any required pre-use checks.
  • Prepare the wood-chipper for operation including fuelling and refuelling operations.
  • Carry out any basic routine maintenance to the wood-chipper including using any manufacturer’s tool kits.
  • Start, stop and operate the portable wood-chipper safely and efficiently.
  • Identify the most suitable areas where to site the wood-chipper.
  • Store and transport the wood-chipper safely.
  • Carry out any required post operation checks.
  • Identify all PPE minimum requirements relating to the wood chipper.
  • Theoretical Assessment.
  • Practical Assessment.

What do I get if I pass the course?

Delegates who successfully complete this course will be awarded a Wood Chipper Operators Certificate of Training and a photo id card.
